Magnetometry Instruments

MPMS-XL

The MPMS-XL SQUID magnetometer provides highly sensitive magnetic measurements. Its standard operation covers:

Temperature range: 1.8-350 K (330 K maximum for plastic holders)

Field range: +- 5 T maximum field

Measurement types: DC or AC magnetometry

MPMS-3

The MPMS-3 is the successor instrument to the MPMS-XL, with a number of changes to its operation. It is capable of equivalent measurements to

the XL and has a number of speed and efficiency improvements, as well as a number of options for specialised measurements.

Standard operation:

1.8-390 K (350 K maximum for plastic holders)

DC, VSM, and AC magnetometry

+- 7 T maximum field

MPMS-3 Options:

mpms 3 sample kits

Ultra low field: The Ultra-Low Field (ULF) Option for the MPMS3 repurposes the same modulation and trim coils utilized for AC measurements to allow the user to accurately null the remnant magnetic field within a given ±5 Oe setpoint.

Oven: provides a way to make sensitive magnetometry measurements at controlled temperatures from 300 K up to 1,000 K. The sample is attached to the heater stick using alumina-cement

Sample rotator: intended to measure the angular dependence of magnetic moments in anisotropic samples. The option includes three types of sample holders which allow samples to rotate with respect to the applied magnetic field. Samples are mounted on a small platform, which enables sample rotations of up to 370° (0° to 370°) in a minimum of 0.1° increments. The Rotator is designed to operate from 1.8K to 350K and +/-7T.

Magneto-optic rod: The Magneto-Optic is a state-of-the-art tool used for investigations of photo-induced magnetization and related effects in samples. The MO option comes standard with a Xenon lamp and filters to tune the wavelength of light generated between 360 nm and 845 nm. The MO option is capable of operating within 1.8 K to 350K and +/- 7T. The option is intended for use in DC Scan mode.

Electrical transport: This option enables users to make several different types of transport measurements over a wide range of resistance values and sample types. The option contains two separate channels, each with its own dedicated electronics to allow simultaneous, continuous resistance measurement of two different samples. The current source has a minimum precision of 1 nA and a maximum current of 100 mA. It is capable of supplying both DC and AC current with frequencies from 0.1 Hz to 200 Hz. The preamplifiers consist of a high gain amplifier, a programmable gain amplifier and a high impedance (current) amplifier. These three preamps, in conjunction with the current source, give the ETO a noise floor of 10 nΩ and allow measurement of resistances up to 5 GΩ.

high pressure cell: The HMD cell is an easy to use Beryllium Copper cylindrical cell for pressuring samples for use in the Quantum Design MPMS. Maximum applied pressures up to 1.3 GPa, up to 2.6mm diameter high pressure region (2.2 mm actual sample space diameter), Novel pressurization system that requires no external press, no copper rings to secure the pressure – ensures easy sample removal and low running costs, compatible with DC and VSM transport.
