The Malvern Panalytical Empyrean Alpha 1 diffractometer was installed in the department in 2011. It is in a high resolution, monochromatic configuration. Users may vary the optics of the Empyrean to best suit their measurement, making it is the instrument of choice for a high quality Rietveld worthy diffraction pattern.

Monochromator or nickel filter: Ge(111) single bounce monochromator (27.6 degree)
Primary optics, defaults in bold:
- 0.02, 0.04 radian (or removed) changeable soller slits,
- 5, 10, 15, 20mm mask,
- programmable divergence slit (default fixed 1/2 degree)
- fixed primary antiscatter slit, changable from 1/32 to 4 degree (default 1 degree)
secondary optics:
- 0.02, 0.04 radian (or removed) changeable soller slits
- programmable antiscatter slit (default fixed 1 degree)
Detector: PIXcel1D, low backround silicon strip direct detector with a 3.3473 degree active length. Energy thresholding resolution ~1.4KeV.
Sample Stages: Spinner stage, Flat bracket stage, Capillary spinner stage.
